Field Practices That Will Ensure Maximum Maize Production For Farmers
The country has recently been hit by a food crisis that has seen maize, the most available source of carbohydrates become scarce. As the government tries to put in place measures seeking to subsidize production by providing basic farm inputs at a cheaper cost, farmers too have the responsibility to compliment the former's efforts by making sure production is at its maximum. To achieve this, farmers must practice high end field practices. Among them include the following:
1. Weed Control.
Maize is actually one of the poorest competers of nutrients. Maize fields should therefore be kept free of weeds most of the times. Weeding should normally start two to three weeks after planting and repeated after the same period of time or depending on the tendency of the weeds to emerge.
2. Fertilizer Application.
Maize requires sufficient amounts of nitrogen during it's growing period for better development of the folliage. Both basal fertilizers like CAN and folliar fertilizers can be applied to supplement on this nutrient when maize attains knee high height. Just before flowering, CAN should be applied again to aid in the process.

3. Pest Control.
Pests like stalk borers attack maize stalks and feed on them, making them weak. They also open tunnels inside maize cobs thus interfering with their development. Farmers are advised to seek help from nearby extension officers regarding the best pesticides that could be used to combat these field pests.
5. Disease Control.
Common diseases like maize smut and maize streak should be controlled. Affected crops should be uprooted and burnt. Use of pesticides should follow a prescription from agricultural extension officers.
While this article may only give a summary of these practices, farmers are obliged to ensuring that they seek technical support from the ministry of agriculture at the subcounty level for better farming practices that will lead to food security in the country.
